3 years later….

The following takes place between 12:00am and 1:00am.

Jack Bauer yawned and leaned back in his chair. He bit down on his lip as he tried to move through the firewall. About twenty minutes ago, Jack had found some chatter on the NSA server and he followed it using his old C.T.U. instincts.
“Hey, Laura!” Jack called, “can you help me with this?”
A petite blond woman of about thirty five walked over to Jack and leaned over his computer. “What do you need?”
“Something’s going on with this server and D.O.D.’s put up a firewall that I can’t get through.”
Laura punched a few keys in on the computer and then turned to Jack, smiling. “That’s because you don’t have that kind of clearance.”
Jack smiled back. “Can you get it for me?”
Laura leaned into Jack’s face. “What do I get in return?”
Jack suddenly stood up. “Oh, it’s no big deal. I was just curious. And besides, it’s late. I have to come back in at seven tomorrow morning.” Staring past Lauren’s disappointed face, Jack got up and walked past her and stopped in the file room.
Ever since Jack had left C.T.U. three years before, he’d never been the same. China had definitely changed him, but there was more to it than that. Jack Bauer had to start from scratch. Like before he ever met Teri. You see, Jack left C.T.U., moved to San Francisco, and started working for NSA; all because he had to leave his true love, Audrey Raines. And he still hadn’t gotten over her. Every night Jack fell asleep thinking about her and the more he thought about her, the worse he felt. It had been his fault that she went to China looking for him, and it was his fault that she had been messed up in the process. Jack had been in such pain that he distanced himself from everyone he knew, including his best friend, Chloe, hoping that the pain would go away. To make matters worse, his colleague Laura Richards obviously had feelings for him but Jack knew he could never return them. He didn’t want to hurt her the way he’d hurt Audrey. Another surge of guilt so unbearable swept through Jack that he almost groaned.
“Sure. I’ll just go get that for you.” Jack heard Laura’s voice approaching and he ducked behind some files. She came in and opened one. “Here it is, Dylan. It just got filed wrong!” She left and Jack re-emerged.
He looked around and decided to wait for everyone to leave. Then he’d find out what the problem was with the server.

Audrey Raines cried out in her sleep. She tossed and turned and woke up suddenly, sobbing. “Don’t! Don’t!” she cried.
The door opened and her father, James Heller, walked in. He sat on her bed and held her. “What’s the matter, honey? Did you have the nightmare again?”
Audrey could only regain her breath and keep herself from crying. She knew the nightmare wasn’t real but it scared her every night. In her nightmare, she was sleeping and Jack came up to her bedside. He had talked to her and told her that he had to leave and would never come back. Each time she tried to call out to him and say “I’m here, don’t leave!” but he never seemed to hear her. Then, she would wake up in her dream and learn that the Chinese had killed Jack and captured her again and kept on torturing her for Jack’s location. Only, he would no longer be able to save her.
“Dad, please. Make the nightmare stop!” Audrey cried.
“I can’t, Audie. But a doctor can. You’ve been having this nightmare for weeks and weeks, and it’s the same one. You need more help.”
“Dad, I’ve recovered. I don’t need anymore help. I’m not a child.”
“Yes, but you didn’t see yourself, three years ago. You were less responsive than a baby. If this is happening, that may be a sign that you’re having more problems.”
Audrey sighed deeply. “Do you really think that I need to see another doctor?”
“Yes, I do. And your memory isn’t what it should be either, Audie. Maybe the man can help more than you think.”
“Alright” Audrey nodded. “We’ll go in the morning.”
“That’s my girl.” Heller kissed the top of Audrey’s head and left her room. Audrey laid back down in her bed and tried to fall asleep.

Jack Bauer ducked behind the files as Robert Manson, the Director of Jack’s branch in NSA walked by. As soon as Jack heard the lock click he jumped from his hiding spot and ran over to Lauren’s computer. Using an old trick that Tony Almeida had taught him, he backed up the files and found Lauren’s user I.D. and logged onto the server. Strips of numbers went flying by on the screen uncontrollably and Jack could make no sense of it. It was completely backed up and seemed to be in a different language. Jack frowned. It looked German.
He started a sort and turned on the language translator. He picked up a phone and called the woman he knew that could sort through it.

Chloe and Morris O’Brian sat on the couch, watching their movie when they heard a little voice. “Mommy, Daddy.” They looked up to see their two and half year old son, Milo, rubbing his eyes.
“What is it, honey?” Morris asked. “What are you doing up?”
“Edgar’s making too much noise.” Milo put his hands over his ears.
Chloe smiled. “He’s probably snoring. Come on, we’ll make him stop. Morris, can you pause the movie?”
Morris hit the pause button and watched his wife and son go up the steps. He sighed. He and Chloe had been through so much. They’d been married and then when he started drinking, she’d left him. They then decided to get back together and Morris finally stopped drinking. Their relationship went uphill when Chloe found out she was pregnant and the two got remarried. But problems were aroused again when Chloe found out she was really pregnant with twins and the two had to prepare themselves for being parents twice at the same time.
The phone suddenly rang and Morris frowned. He looked at his watch which read 12:26. Who would be calling at this time of night?
Morris picked up the phone. “Hello?”
“Morris? Where’s Chloe?”
Morris frowned again. “She’s…who is this?”
“It’s Jack. Can I speak to her please? This is very urgent.”
“Jack Bauer? What the hell? What are you doing? We haven’t heard from you in three years!!”
“Morris, please. I need to speak to Chloe.”
“Who’s on the phone?” Chloe came downstairs and looked questioningly at her husband.
“It’s Jack.” Morris said simply, handing her the phone.
Chloe gawked for a second and then grabbed it. “What do you want?”
“Chloe, listen to me. I’m at NSA. I was trying to load a server and it was jammed. I snuck onto my colleague’s computer and there are strips of code going all over the place in a different language. I think it’s German. I’m running a sort but it’s not going quick enough.”
Chloe sighed. “Why is this is suddenly so important? You haven’t talked to me for three years and now you expect me to just help you?”
“Chloe, it may be a matter of national security.”
Chloe rolled her eyes. “Fine.”
She hung up the phone and turned to Morris. “I’m going to get our lap tops. I need you to help me sort through Jack’s server so he can rest easy and we can finish the movie.”
Morris shrugged his shoulders. “Whatever. I kind of miss the old C.T.U. setting anyway.”

Bill Buchanan took off his glasses and put his laptop on sleep mode. He was too tired to keep working for the rest of the night. He’d have to finish in the morning.
He turned around and looked at his wife, Karen Hayes. “Are you about done?”
Karen nodded. “I’m pretty tired too. I never knew that running your own business could be so hard.”
Bill nodded in agreement. “I didn’t even get through half of the stuff I wanted to today. I hope that we won’t be behind.”
Karen stood up and gave her husband a kiss on the cheek. “Bill, you worry too much. There’s more to life than working. You remember that.”
Bill smiled up at her. “I know. You remind me all too often.” He stood up and put his arm around her. “Let’s get some rest.”
Suddenly, Karen’s computer dinged.
Bill frowned. “You just got new mail.”
Karen sat down and clicked on her email and then looked up at Bill. “It’s from Chloe.”
Bill came over and looked at the message that Chloe had sent. It stated that Jack had contacted her and asked for help. She asked if Bill and Karen could help.
“Jack Bauer?” Bill said. “We haven’t heard from him in almost three years!”
Karen looked up at Bill. “We should help her. You never know what might be going on.”
Bill logged back onto his computer and started to help Chloe and Karen sort through the German codes.

Jack Bauer began to dial Chloe’s number again and when someone tapped him on his shoulder. He whirled around to find Laura staring at him with her hands crossed. “Well? What are you doing?”
Jack looked at her square in the eye. “Trying to figure out what is wrong with this server.”
“Illegally logging onto my name and using my information can get you into a lot of trouble, Jack. Even I don’t like to be used.”
“I’m not using you, Laura. Look, I’ll…”
The phone rang and Jack picked it up. “Bauer.”
“Jack, its Chloe. I used my old log in for C.T.U. and sorted through the server. You’re right, the codes are in German and addresses keep coming up. But one particular set of numbers keeps coming up.”
“What is it?”
“Well, Bill figured…”
“You called Bill?”
“I had to Jack. With Bill, Karen and Morris helping, I was able to decode this in minutes rather than hours. But the address that kept coming up was not that far away from your building.”
“Chloe, what’s the location?”
“Well, I’m not sure exactly whose house it is but the address is 4521 Greenwich Avenue.”
Jack gaped. “Are you sure?”
“Yes, Jack. Why would I lie to you?”
“Okay, thanks Chloe.”
Jack hung up the phone and turned to Laura.
Laura stared at Jack, hard. “What is going on? Tell me now!”

***************

Morris sighed. “I’m glad that’s over with. Now we can finish…”
“Something’s not right,” Chloe interrupted. “Why did Jack recognize that address?”
Morris shrugged. “Sweetheart, I don’t know. But it’s his problem.”
Chloe shook her head. “We are his friends. We have to help him.”
“But he hasn’t contacted us in THREE YEARS” Morris said in exasperation.
“I don’t care” Chloe was already typing on her computer. “We owe it to…oh my gosh!”
“What?!” Morris ran over to her laptop.
Chloe sat back in her seat. “That’s Marilyn and Josh Bauer’s house!”

****************

Laura stared at Jack when he finished his story. “So, now someone is after your sister-in-law and nephew. Do you know how insane that sounds?”
“Laura, I give you my word that I’m not lying. Can you please let me go? I need to finish this.”
“I’m helping you.”
“No! This could get very dangerous.” Jack said.
Suddenly, a shot rang out over their heads. Jack and Laura dived to the floor.
“Dammit! They must know we were on their server!”
Jack rolled over to his desk and grabbed a gun from underneath the table.
Laura gasped. “Jack Bauer!”
Jack looked at her seriously. “We are in danger; I need you to follow me.”
Jack grabbed her arm and they crawled underneath desks toward the stairwell. Jack tried to see in the dark.
When he spotted movement, Jack pointed his gun and fired. A cry was heard in the dark and Jack rolled over to the man.
“Who are you?” he jabbed the gun on the man’s chest.
“Wouldn’t you like to know” the man said nastily.
Jack punched the man in the face and then whispered in his ear. “You probably don’t know who I am, but I could kill you if I wanted to.”
“Fine, Jack Bauer. Kill me; but your friends will die too.”
“What?” Jack knocked the man out and ran over to a telephone. He tried calling Chloe’s number but the lines were jammed.
He looked at Laura. “We have to get out of here.”

12:53:23 12:53:24 12:53:25 12:53:26

Chloe O’Brian tried to dial the Bauer’s house, but the phone lines were jammed. She looked at Morris worriedly. “Something’s going to happen. And we’re in the middle of it.”
Suddenly, Chloe and Morris heard the screams of their twin boys and they raced up the stairs.
Chloe turned the doorknob, but it was locked. The twins crying were heard and Chloe pounded on the door.
“Let me in!” She yelled desperately.
Morris ran into their room grabbed a chair and smashed the door down. Inside, the twin’s cribs were empty and the window was open.
Chloe started to cry and Morris looked out the window. “They’ve been kidnapped. We HAVE to get in touch with Jack.
Suddenly, Morris’ cell phone rang and he picked it up. “This is Morris.”
“Morris, this is Jack, listen I need you to..”
“No, Jack! Our twins have just been kidnapped we don’t have time to help you right now!”
“Morris, that’s what I was trying to warn you about! These people are after me and my family. You’ve helped me and now you’re in trouble too. I need you to find Bill and Karen NOW!!”
Morris immediately hung up and tried their number. The phone lines were still jammed. He dialed the cell and waited.

******************

Bill and Karen were finishing their work when Bill’s cell phone started ringing.
“Buchanan.”
“Bill, you and Karen are in danger. They’re coming after Jack and they took our twins. You need to get somewhere safe, now!”
Bill looked back at Karen. “Go down to the basement, NOW!”
Karen suddenly looked scared. “Bill, what the…”
Suddenly, the door flew down and men in masks with guns came barreling through.
Bill dropped the phone and jumped in front of his wife.
The men came through and knocked Bill to the ground. They grabbed a kicking and screaming Karen and started towards the door. “Get away from her!” Bill stood up and tackled one of the men.
The men beat Bill back until he was unconscious.
“No, stop!! Get off of me! Bill! Bill!!!” Karen screamed and cried as they dragged her away.

Morris and Chloe could only look at each other helplessly as they heard Karen on the other end off the phone line.
